Role Overview
We are looking for a Junior Legal Counsel to join the legal and compliance team of our Maltese entity, a licensed Electronic Money Institution. This is a unique opportunity for a motivated, detail-oriented law graduate or early-career lawyer to start their career inside a regulated financial institution and gain hands-on experience that is hard to find at junior level. You will see first-hand how a licensed EMI operates, from contract management and corporate governance to regulatory compliance and data protection. Working closely with senior legal colleagues, you will support day-to-day legal operations and build a strong foundation in financial services and payments law.
Responsibilities
• Draft and review agreements and client documentation under the guidance of senior colleagues
• Manage document signing, contract registers and legal archives
• Prepare corporate documents such as board resolutions and meeting minutes
• Support the Compliance team on AML/KYC and regulatory matters, including audits and regulator requests
• Assist the Data Protection Officer with GDPR tasks
• Monitor legal and regulatory developments and prepare short summaries for the team
• Coordinate with external law firms and consultants
• Handle other legal and administrative tasks as needed
Requirements
• Law degree (LL.B., LL.D. or Master of Advocacy) or an equivalent qualification obtained in an EU jurisdiction
• Warrant to practise as an advocate in Malta, or progress towards obtaining one, will be considered an advantage
• Up to 2 years of post-qualification or relevant experience within a law firm, in-house legal function or compliance department. Recent graduates with relevant internship experience are encouraged to apply
• Sound understanding of contract law, company law and data protection legislation, including the GDPR
• Demonstrable interest in financial services regulation, in particular payment services and electronic money
• Excellent command of the English language, both written and spoken
• Proficiency in additional languages will be considered an asset
• Strong analytical skills and meticulous attention to detail
• Ability to prioritise effectively and work to strict deadlines
• Proactive approach, sound judgement and willingness to develop professionally
• Proficiency in MS Office. Familiarity with DocuSign or similar e-signature platforms will be considered an asset
